Hazel is Centre Director of Training for People That Care, an NCFE (formerly CACHE) training centre offering accredited qualifications and courses for the early years sector.
What is accreditation?
Accreditation involves the independent, third-party evaluation of a conformity assessment/awarding body (in my case, my team and NCFE) against recognised early years standards, legislation and unit specifications. A third-party evaluation of standards is important to convey formal demonstration of impartiality and competence against knowledge and skills-based assessment tasks (some of this is building a portfolio of assessments and evidence and some of it will be directly observed practice, professional discussions and questioning).
Quality training with accountability.
As accredited courses lead to accountability and higher level of quality education. Students feel safe as they are being supported and mentored in your setting as well as qualified trainers and assessors; they can choose courses with an institute (awarding body) that has passed strategic quality measures and has been vetted by others in your professional field.
Accreditation ensures that colleges and training providers offer high-quality education and a great learning experience for all students. NCFE centres have to meet standards and are inspected and audited to ensure that these standards are consistently high. This provides you with assurance that accredited providers have met a good standard and must continue to do so to maintain accreditation status.
A skilled workforce
In England, early years settings must meet the minimum standards for staff ratios and qualifications set out within the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. Parents/carers will want to know that staff caring for their children are qualified. Increasingly parents are asking setting about staff training, qualifications and paediatric first aid training.
The impact of accredited training and qualifications
Qualifications make staff knowledge and skills visible. In addition to meeting the minimum registration standards (e.g.the EYFS) furthering your/staff’s experience and knowledge may help with motivating staff and with helping up their career ladders within your setting.
Overall, the accredited courses will help boost the employer and the individual’s confidence. When I follow up with students that have completed their qualifications, they often state that they now have more confidence and job satisfaction. They also talk about their qualification opening the doors to future opportunities for promotion within the childcare setting as some aspire to be the room leaders, deputy managers, managers of the future. Part of the impact for employers is being able to grow your own workforce!
