The Department for Education (DfE) has announced planned changes to early years staff qualification requirements

15 June 2023

 The consultation includes proposals to:

* Remove the requirement for level 3 educators to hold a level 2 (GCSE or equivalent) maths qualification, and instead apply this requirement to managers-only.

* Introducing an ‘experience-based route’ for educators to gain approved status to work within staff:child ratios, so that “otherwise suitable educators who don’t hold an approved level 3 qualification have a path to gaining ‘approved status’ without having to do a new qualification”.

* Where applicable, reducing the percentage of level 2 qualified staff required per ratio for children of all ages from ‘at least half’ to either 30% or 40%.

* Changing the qualification requirements for ratios so that they would not apply outside of peak working hours (for example, 9am-5pm).

I feel as though that this will be a positive move for qualifications because it is such a shame that students are having to redo their level three qualifications. I was only out yesterday with a setting in Marden in the Kent Borough and a lady had moved to work there from Wales and Manager Paula had researched that her members of staff only needs to do two units to be able to be the standard for England or she would have had to do the full EYE qualification again.

Paula explain how frustration she was that she had emailed The Department for Education (DfE) reviews but had no reply from them. I would like to know how many other people have completed qualifications to keep in line with the department of education that didn’t need to to be counted in the staff ratios. Also it makes me wonder how the maths qualification will affect managers from moving settings? Please have your say in the consultation please see the link below!
